How to Reuse a Kratky Kit: Cleaning Between Crops

A good Kratky kit can grow crop after crop. To reuse a Kratky kit well, clean it properly between harvests. Old roots, algae and residue left behind can carry problems into the next crop.

Why cleaning matters

At the end of a crop, the container holds old solution that is depleted and unbalanced, fine roots that will rot if left, and often a film of residue or algae. Starting a new crop on top of this invites root rot and algae. The Kratky problems and fixes guide explains how these problems start.

Step 1: Harvest and remove the plant

Harvest the crop, then lift the net pots out. Roots often grow into a dense mat, so work them free gently. Compost the plant and roots if you can.

Step 2: Dispose of the old solution

Leftover nutrient solution can be diluted and used to water houseplants or outdoor plants, or poured away following local guidance. Do not reuse it for the next Kratky crop.

Step 3: Clean the reservoir and lid

  1. Scrub away residue and any algae with warm water and a little mild dish soap. A soft brush helps in corners.
  2. Rinse thoroughly so no soap remains.
  3. Some growers follow with a dilute sanitizing rinse, such as a weak hydrogen peroxide solution or a product made for cleaning hydroponic equipment, used as its label directs, then rinse again with clean water.
  4. Let everything dry completely.

If algae was a problem, this is a good moment to improve light blocking, as described in Kratky containers.

Step 4: Clean the net pots

Roots grow through the mesh and can be stubborn. Soak the pots in warm water, then pull or brush the old roots out. An old toothbrush works well. Wash, rinse and dry.

Step 5: Clean or replace the grow media

  • Clay pebbles: reusable. Remove roots, soak and scrub, rinse well and dry. Some growers sanitize them as they do the reservoir.
  • Rockwool cubes and plugs: usually single use, because roots grow through them.

See rockwool vs clay pebbles for more on each.

Step 6: Inspect for wear

Check for cracks, warping or light leaks in the container and lid. A cracked lid lets light in; a scratched clear jar may need a new covering.

Step 7: Start the next crop fresh

Mix a new batch of solution, check pH, fill to the bottom of the net pots and plant fresh seedlings, as in Kratky kit setup. Rotating crops, such as following lettuce with herbs, keeps things interesting.

How often to deep clean

Clean after every crop. A quick rinse is not enough if roots or residue remain. If a crop had root rot or heavy algae, give the kit a thorough sanitizing clean before reusing it.

Storing a kit between seasons

Store the clean, completely dry kit somewhere dust-free. Keep net pots, lid and media together so the kit is ready for the next crop. Check nutrient bottles for expiry dates and keep them closed and out of direct sun.

A clean, well-maintained kit is part of getting the most out of your Kratky hydroponics kit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse Kratky nutrient solution for the next crop?

No. By harvest it is depleted and unbalanced. Start each crop with freshly mixed solution.

Can I reuse rockwool in a Kratky kit?

It is generally used once, because old roots grow through it and it can harbor disease. Clay pebbles can be cleaned and reused.

What should I use to clean a Kratky kit?

Warm water and mild dish soap, rinsed thoroughly. A diluted hydroponic cleaner or hydrogen peroxide, used as directed, can follow if the last crop had algae or root rot.

Can I use bleach to clean a Kratky kit?

Some growers use a very dilute bleach solution, followed by several thorough rinses and complete drying. It must never be mixed with other cleaners. Products made for hydroponic equipment are an easier choice.

How do I get roots out of net pots?

Let the pots dry so the old roots shrink, then soak and scrub with a stiff brush. Stubborn pieces can be pulled out with tweezers.

Should I replace my net pots after each crop?

Not usually. Clean net pots can be reused many times. Replace any that are cracked or brittle.

Is algae on an old kit a problem for the next crop?

Yes, if it is left behind. Scrub it all off and improve light blocking before the next crop, or it will regrow quickly.

How long should a Kratky kit dry after cleaning?

Until every part is completely dry, including inside net pot mesh and clay pebbles. Drying overnight on a rack is usually enough; storing kits damp encourages mold.
